The watercolor series ‘Dolce Far Niente: Beach Idelness’ captures the serene beach scenes where people engage in casual activities, embracing moments of relaxation, reading books, immersing themselves in their phones, playing ball games, and relishing the beauty of simply being – the sweet idleness of beach life.

My fascination with phenomenology is evident in the way I explore the interplay between figure and background within these works. I often construct the space scenically, placing solitary characters as if layered on sheets in a landscape mise-en-scène. The delineation between figure and background is typically marked by contrasts in pose, line, and color.

Nevertheless, I make a conscious effort to seamlessly integrate the characters into the composition, allowing them to either extend a developing motif, set an impulse, or become central points of attraction. The figures generally embody a passive-contemplative presence, whether they are gazing at the scene from the sidelines, strolling along its edge, or deeply engrossed in their own thoughts and activities. The directions of their intentions are inferred from their glances, poses, and trajectories of movement.

I aim to convey that the characters, acting as my artistic surrogates, observe the scenes from the periphery while simultaneously experiencing everything happening around them. In essence, the landscape continues within each individual and reflects their state of being. Amidst these oppositions, a perceptual gap emerges, providing a space where viewers can place their emotions and memories. This dynamic gives rise to the phenomenological procedural contact between the viewer and the perceived image, a connection that I actively seek in my art.
